Gone
to Pot
The
Life and Work of John Clappison
by
Pauline Coyle
is now
published
This
is an important and thorough work on the vocation and life of a man whose work
has often been cited as the epitome of post-war industrial ceramic design. Many
of the pieces he designed for Hornsea Pottery have won acclaim, especially his
‘Home Décor’ range, which has been likened to some of the most advanced work in
Studio Ceramics.
As
experts and academics research the relevance of this significant design period,
specialists such as Lesley Jackson, Dr Graham McLaren,
Alan Peat, Paul Atterbury, Andrew Casey and Wayne
Hemingway have praised the work John produced during his time at Hornsea
Pottery. During his career, John also created pieces for Ravenhead
glass, Royal Doulton and the Upsala
Ekeby group and he now designs and produces his own
ceramics.
The
book is divided into two parts for easy reference, a biography, chronicling a life devoted to the
concept and realisation of many acclaimed examples of contemporary ceramic
design and a comprehensive manual of most ceramic and glass pieces that John
designed. There are many previously unpublished pictures, around 200 monochrome
and 120 in colour. It is a 190 page paperback with a high resolution, gloss
laminate card cover
